Thermal

Thermal workwear, in particular thermal underwear, are items of clothing that are frequently a pair of long pants or a shirt with long sleeves, intended to be worn beneath outer clothing on days that are cold.  They are often referred to as long johns or long underwear.  Thermal underwear is widely used amongst females and males whose work takes them outdoors or for individuals who are active in sports and other activities outside during the winter or in cold climates.  Some varieties of thermal underwear come with many layers of different types of textiles for added protection from the cold and for wicking sweat away during hard work or the playing of sports.

Socks are the other key items of clothing.  If you believe that socks are only white plain covers for the feet, you have not gone shopping recently.  There are a wide variety of socks that can be split according to looks, purpose and materials they are made out of ranging from light dress types suitable as workwear socks to socks for the house created to keep toes snug and warm.

There are socks created for particular purposes.  For example, athletic socks tend to be manufactured from cotton or similar materials that will wick sweat from the foot maintaining dry feet throughout athletic activity.  The majority of athletic designs is close fitting and created to stop at the ankle, permitting circulation throughout the calf while athletic shoes are being worn.  Hiking socks are another example of socks but these have a heavier make up and the go up the calf.  They are created to protect the foot throughout difficult hikes with many layers of material that is insulated, while socks for skiing are designed to maintain warmth in the feet, wick away moisture and fit closely within ski boots to increase comfort.  Athletic shops tend to be an excellent provider of athletic socks in a variety of styles.

Thermal socks can be manufactured from different materials.  The standard for the industry and the perfect insulator for a long time has been wool.  Wool keeps in heat even if it is wet therefore it is perfect for wet and cold conditions.  If you have skin that is sensitive, Merino wool will provide the same warmth however it is more comfortable and softer than conventional wool socks.

Socks that are blended synthetics frequently provide the same or better level of warmth as wool.  Depending on the chemistry of your body and the amount of activity you will be involved in, it would be good to wear a liner sock as well like a polypropylene one which will wick away moisture from the feet.

It will require trial and error to learn which sock are suitable for your feet and your expected activity level.  Having many pairs of socks to alternate between is recommended when outside.  Having socks on your feet that are comfortable and dry will minimize the possibility of acquiring ‘hot spots’ on your feet that could turn into blisters.
